In the video below we see Ravi Shankar providing a Master Class for Sitar with his daughter, Anoushka Shankar, demonstrating the role of a very advanced student. He introduces this as “some Sitar lessons.” To a casual onlooker this may seem to be the kind of teaching one does as something basic, something that is very beneath the level of serious technical discipling or apprenticeship. It contains no apparent intellectual properties, and it does not demonstrate any advanced theoretical jargon. In reality, however, this is the most advanced teaching available in music. I shall explain.
