Thanks for this forceful reminder that Romans 13 is not a blank check written by God to the state. If authority does not serve justice, restrain evil, and protect the neighbor, it forfeits any claim to Christian obedience.

The current examples, though urgent and aligned with my views, may let some readers avoid the deeper biblical argument by hearing only a partisan charge.

But the central claim is exactly right. Christians owe the state limited obedience, never worship; civic order, never conscience; taxes, perhaps, but not the image of God. Caesar may have his coin. He may not have the soul. Still, if my own attention is consumed by the evils of power, I have already conceded too much to them. Humbling.
