This video is quite a find, made in 2017 by Howard Goodall. As a composer himself, he was able to explain a great deal about the music that is quite interesting, such as the shifting rhythms that are a very authentic Indian component of George Harrison’s Within You Without You, and the magnificently subversive bass line Paul McCartney played in Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, and so much more. It is refreshing to watch a video that concentrates on the music as music instead of the usual celebrity gossip garbage, distracting speculations about “what the lyrics mean,” and mostly irrelevant romantic notions about the sixties and drugs and counter-culture - I mean, the average Beatles fan was just a regular and fairly boring person who lived an uneventful life like everybody else. As Ringo Starr often reminds us, “It is about the music.” This is a video presentation about music as only a musician can make.
